IRS Form 1098-T: Tuition Payments Statement

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 ("the Act") created income tax benefits for students attending an eligible educational institution with qualified education expenses. Taxpayers who pay qualified educational expenses at an eligible educational institution may qualify for the American Opportunity (Hope) Credit, the Lifetime Learning Educational Tax Credit, or the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction. The Act requires eligible educational institutions to report certain enrollment and financial information on Form 1098-T to students and the Internal Revenue Service. However, the enrollment information by itself does not establish eligibility for either credit or deduction.

The IRS expects taxpayers to maintain adequate records to support any information used when preparing their individual tax return. Form 1098-T is an informational statement intended to serve as a guide for taxpayers. Taxpayers should refer to their own financial records when calculating the eligible amount that can be claimed for any educational related income tax credit or deduction. For instruction on how to view the details financial information on the 1098-T click here. For instruction on how to review your Bursar account click here.
