Card Reader Setup for Kiosk Administrators |
 |
This page gives instructions on setting
up your card reader to work with the Card Reader Java Applet. These
instructions assume that
- Your machine is running Windows 2000
or XP.
- You are accessing the Kiosk Login page
with the Internet Explorer 5.5. Service Pack 2 or higher.
- Internet Explorer is configured to
use the TIME recommended Sun Java Plug-in: https://www.fms.indiana.edu/time/jv.asp.
Follow these steps:
-
Make sure that the card reader is plugged
in to the COM1 port (if your computer has only one COM port, it should
be COM1).
-
Determine the path name of Java Runtime
Environment. This path name will vary depending on the version of
Java that you have installed. For the remainder of the instructions
you'll want replace all occurrences of jdreXXXX with the name
of the folder where the default JRE is installed.
- Go to C:\Program Files\Java\ to see the installed
JREs. If there is only one then copy the name of the folder and
continue to step 3. If more than one version of Java exists on your
machine you'll want to determine what the Java Plug-in is using
by default:
- Open the Java Plug-in control panel by going
to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel. Double click on Java
Plug-in icon.
- Go to the tab labeled "About". This will
tell you which JRE the Java Plug-in is using by default.
- Verify that the version number listed by
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition is listed under
c:\Program Files\Java. Copy the name of that folder and continue
to the next step (step 3).
- Make sure that three files have been placed in the
appropriate directories (right-click the links below to download the
files.)
- win32com.dll must
be placed in C:\Program Files\Java\jdreXXXX\bin
- javax.comm.properties
must be placed in C:\Program Files\Java\jdreXXXX\lib
- comm.jar
must be placed in C:\Program Files\Java\jdreXXXX\lib\ext
- Verify your java.policy file
- Open your java.policy file which
is located in C:\Program Files\Java\jdreXXXX\lib\security
- By default your java.policy file
will look like this one default_java.policy.
If you've change it, for whatever reasons, just make sure you
have granted all permissions to the standard java extensions.
You can do this by copying lines 3-8 from default_java.policy
into your own java.policy file.
- Go to TIME and test your card reader.
- Go to the TIME
Kiosk Login page.
- Choose "Always" when asked if you
trust the applet signed by TIME so that you don't continue to
receive this message in the future. You must choose either "Yes"
or "Always" in order for the Card Reader Applet to work. If you'd
like more information about this please send a message to the
support list.
Your card reader should now respond properly to the Card Reader Applet on the Kiosk Login screen.
