Faculty members who plan to host international faculty or staff should have their departmental payroll clerk or account manager contact the Office of International Services in Bloomington or the Office of International Affairs in Indianapolis before making any contractual arrangements. The office will provide information about available visa options and assist in determining which visa status is most appropriate for the visitor's individual circumstances. This will ensure the following:

  1. Visitors can receive the appropriate payments
  2. They are not denied entry into the U.S.
  3. They do not have more taxes withheld than are necessary
  4. Hosting departments are not assessed fines by the IRS or the INS

Payments to international faculty and staff are subject to US tax law and must expect appropriate tax withholding. Please complete and submit an International Tax Questionnaire along with supporting documents listed in step 2 of the instructions for our review.

If you are from a Tax Treaty Country, please be aware that treaty benefits are elective in the US, not automatic. To allow IU to consider your income for treaty benefits, please complete the International Questionnaire (see above).
