Why Have I Not Received a Form 1098-T?

Was Indiana University required to issue a Form 1098-T to me?
Indiana University is required to issue Form 1098-T, an informational return titled "Tuition Payments Statement", reporting either qualified education expenses paid or billed during the calendar year to enrolled, or previously enrolled, students. Educational institutions are not required to issue Form 1098-T to a nonresident alien unless the nonresident alien specifically requests that one be issued.

I meet the eligibility requirements listed above but I still have not received the Form 1098-T. Can you explain why?
Here are some possible reasons you have not received the Form 1098-T:

  1. Mailing Details
    • The Form 1098-T is required to be post-marked by January 31st each year. Paper forms are printed and mailed for student not consenting for electronic delivery during the last week of January. A request for a paper duplicate Form 1098-T will not be fulfilled until after February 10th in order to allow time for the mail to be delivered.

    • The form is mailed to the Student Home address on your university account as of December 31st. There are several common problems encountered in the mailing address such as missing street, city, state, or zip code; invalid city, state, or zip code; or incomplete foreign address.

    • If you moved but didn't update your Student Home address prior to January 1st, the U.S. Postal Service will forward the tax document to your new address if you filed a change of address form with their office. Undeliverable Forms 1098-T are returned to the FMS Customer Service office in Bloomington.

  2. Payment Dates
    • A qualified fee payment is reported on Form 1098-T in the calendar year it is posted to the student account. Spring tuition payments are often paid in December of the prior calendar year. Review the detail financial transactions on your account to determine if the fees were paid in the prior calendar year and previously reported on a Form 1098-T.

  3. Alien Tax Status
    • Our records may indicate you are a nonresident alien for tax purposes which means we are not required to issue the Form 1098-T unless requested. If you are a nonresident alien that would like to receive the Form 1098-T, or if you believe your tax status may be incorrect in our system, please contact the Tax Department with your 10-digit student ID.
